Tour Talk: March 13

PGA Tour Recap

The PGA Tour visited the Arnold Palmer this past weekend where Marc Leishman collected his second PGA tour victory with an 11 under score. This was the first year that Arnold Palmer was not at the back of the 18th green to congratulate the winner. This week the players, media, & 'Arnie’s Army' hounored the late Palmer with many tributes leading up to the event and during the course of the tournament. Leishman’s win was secured with a 50 foot eagle putt on the 16th green that leap frogged him into the tournament lead with two holes to play. The win also secured Leishman’s invite to this year’s masters along with a three year PGA Tour exemption.
In the style of late Palmer, Rory McIlroy played boldly down the stretch clawing his up the leaderboard before falling short on the 18th with a bogey. McIlroy’s game is coming into form at just the right time with the masters only a few weeks away. Adam Hadwin finished in solo 6th with another solid performance following last week’s win at the Valspar Championship.
Next up
The Tour moves to the Austin Country Club for the WGC-Dell Match Play Championship where Jason Day looks to defend his title. Tony Finau is the story of the week leading into the event even though he is still on the outside looking in as the first alternate. Finau made the tough decision this week to not return to the Puerto Rico Open to defend his 2016 title in hopes that a player will bow out before tee off on Wednesday. Check out the Golf Channel tonight for the match up draw.

LPGA Tour Recap

Anna Nordqvist picked up her 7th LPGA win at the Bank of Hope Founder Cup this past weekend Phoenix. Nordqvist posted a course record 61 on Saturday on her way to the victory circle. The rest of the field also had it dialed in this week with no one inside the top 10 posting scores higher than 69 in any of the tournament rounds. Brooke Henderson was in fine form again this week with a T13 finish and a final round 65.
The LPGA moves to the Kia Classic in Carlsbad this week where Lydia Ko looks to defend her title after coming off a T8 finish this week in Phoenix.

Plays of the Weekend

The player’s tribute lead by Sam Saunders was a touching gesture on the Wednesday of the event. The players all hit a ceremonial tee shot on the range acknowledging the late Palmer.

Rory’s charge on Sunday had flashes of a Palmer all day including this shot on the 16th where Rory escaped the trees and almost chipped in.
