PGA Tour Recap

This week the PGA Tour visited TPC San Antonio for the Valero Texas Open where Kevin Chappell claimed his first PGA Tour Victory with a birdie on 18. The final round included a flurry of birdies and eagle tries from across the leaderboard. Tony Finau made a great Sunday charge with 4 birdies on the back nine before dropping a bogey on 18. Brooks Koepka claimed 2nd place with 8 birdies on Sunday making the finish very tight at the top of the leaderboard. It looked like we were going to have a playoff until Chappell stuffed his approach to 8 feet and then drained his birdie putt to win on his 180th career start. Canadian Nick Taylor opened the tournament with a 69 but was unable to keep his card balanced into the weekend finishing T22. Other Canadian finishers include Brad Fritsch T69 and Adam Hadwin T72 after a tough third round when his posted an 82.

Next Week

The PGA Tour heads to Louisiana for the Zurich Classic which is taking on a new look this year with a 2 man team format. TPC Louisiana has been home to many low rounds and bogey free finish from winners of the past 2 years has had Pete Dye add 5 ponds and 100 bunkers to boslter the challenge for the players this week as they tackle the 7,400 yard course. Here is how the four rounds will be played:

“The new 72-hole stroke play format will feature Foursomes (alternate shot) during the first and third rounds and Four-Ball (best ball) during the second and fourth rounds. The starting field will consist of 80 teams (160 players). Each of the top available players from the PGA TOUR Priority Rankings who commits to the tournament will choose his partner, who in turn must have PGA TOUR status unless he is chosen as a tournament sponsor exemption.” ~ PGATOUR.COM

Two notable teams rise to the top of field this week with Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson (Olympic Gold & Silver Medalists) and Jason Day with Rickie Fowler both vying for the first title since the format change. This week it is anyone’s game as both players will need to be lights out to finish on top.
